3D Footwear Design Glossary

The essential vocabulary for designing footwear in 3D. Clear, citable definitions of shoe anatomy, CAD terms, materials and production stages — a reference resource for footwear students, pattern makers and designers.

Shoe anatomy

Counter

#
The counter is the stiff reinforcement placed in the heel area, between upper and lining. It holds the shoe's shape and keeps the heel of the foot in place, ensuring stability and a correct fit.

Eyelet

#
The eyelet is the hole, often reinforced with a metal ring, through which the laces pass. Its position and number on the upper affect both the functionality of the lacing and the shoe's aesthetics.

Heel

#
The heel is the element that raises the rear of the shoe. Its height and shape influence posture, silhouette and style: from flat heels to stilettos, it is one of the most defining design elements.

Insole

#
The insole is the internal layer on which the foot rests. It contributes to comfort and fit and can be anatomical or removable. In shoe construction it is the base onto which the upper is lasted.

Last

#
The last is the three-dimensional mould, in plastic or wood, that reproduces the foot and around which a shoe is built. It defines fit, volume and silhouette, and is the starting point of every design, including in 3D modelling.

Midsole

#
The midsole is the intermediate layer between outsole and insole, found mainly in sneakers and athletic footwear. It absorbs impact and provides cushioning, and is made of materials such as EVA, TPU or technical foams.

Outsole

#
The outsole is the outermost layer of the shoe, the one in contact with the ground. It determines grip, durability and comfort and, together with the heel, defines much of the shoe's technical and aesthetic character.

Quarter

#
The quarter is the rear and side part of the upper that wraps the heel and connects to the vamp. It supports the foot laterally and often hosts eyelets, buckles or other fastening systems.

Shank

#
The shank is the rigid element, in metal or composite, placed between insole and outsole in the arch area. It supports the foot and stabilises the structure, especially in high-heeled footwear.

Toe box

#
The toe box is the reinforcement at the tip of the shoe that protects the toes and preserves its shape. It can be soft or stiff and, in safety footwear, made of metal or composite materials.

Tongue

#
The tongue is the strip of material under the lacing that protects the instep from the pressure of the laces. In sneakers it is often padded and becomes a visible design element.

Upper

#
The upper is the set of parts that cover the top of the foot, above the sole. It groups vamp, quarters, tongue and lining, and is the surface where most of a shoe's aesthetic design is concentrated.

Vamp

#
The vamp is the front part of the upper that covers the toes and instep. It is often the most visible area of the shoe and where stylistic details such as stitching, cuts and appliqués are played out.

Welt

#
The welt is the strip of material that joins upper and outsole in Goodyear and other classic constructions. It allows resoling and adds durability, and is a hallmark detail of high-quality footwear.

CAD & 3D

2D to 3D

#
The 2D-to-3D workflow takes a flat sketch or pattern to a three-dimensional model (and back). It is the core of digital footwear design: Icad Universe keeps both environments synchronised in the same file.

Digital last

#
The digital last is the three-dimensional version of the physical last, imported or scanned into CAD software. It is the base on which a shoe is modelled in 3D: in Icad Universe the shoe is built directly around it.

DXF/DWG export

#
DXF and DWG are exchange formats for 2D CAD data, used to send patterns to cutting plotters and production machines. Exporting correctly to these formats connects digital design to the factory.

Flattening

#
Flattening is the conversion of a curved 3D upper surface into a flat 2D pattern ready for cutting. It is a key step of digital pattern engineering: Icad Universe performs it while keeping the 3D and 2D linked.

Grading

#
Grading is the proportional generation of every size of a style from the base size. In CAD it is automated: a single pattern produces the whole size run, reducing errors and time.

Mesh

#
A mesh is the representation of a 3D object as a net of polygons (usually triangles or quads). It is the format used for rendering, animation and 3D printing, and defines how detailed or faceted a model appears.

NURBS

#
NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) are mathematical curves and surfaces that describe smooth, continuous shapes with high precision. They are the product-CAD standard, ideal for soft surfaces such as those of soles and uppers.

Parametric modelling

#
Parametric modelling builds a 3D model through editable parameters and rules: change a value and the geometry updates automatically. Applied to footwear, it lets you vary volumes and proportions without rebuilding from scratch.

Pattern engineering

#
Pattern engineering is the discipline that breaks a shoe down into the individual pieces to be cut and stitched, defining their shapes, lasting margins and how they fit together. It is the bridge between design and production, now largely done in CAD.

Real-time 3D

#
Real-time 3D is the instant display of changes to a model as it is built, with no computation wait. It speeds up design decisions and reviews with clients and companies on the shoe being developed.

Rendering

#
Rendering is the generation of a realistic image from a 3D model by computing lights, materials and shadows. It lets you present a photorealistic shoe before a physical prototype even exists.

Tech pack

#
The tech pack is the document that gathers all of a style's specifications — measurements, materials, components, stitching, colours — to communicate them to the factory. It is the shared language between design and production, increasingly generated from CAD.

UV mapping

#
UV mapping is the process that unwraps a 3D model's surface onto a 2D plane so textures and graphics can be applied correctly. Good UVs prevent distortion of leathers, prints and logos on the rendered shoe.

Virtual sampling

#
Virtual sampling is the creation of photorealistic digital prototypes in place of physical samples. It drastically cuts time, cost and waste in developing a collection, letting a style be validated before production.

Wireframe

#
A wireframe is the display of a 3D model as a lattice of lines and vertices, without filled surfaces. It lets you check topology, proportions and mesh structure while modelling the shoe.

Materials & textures

Leather

#
Leather is the traditional material of quality footwear, obtained by tanning animal hides. In 3D it is reproduced with textures and PBR materials that faithfully simulate its grain, sheen and softness.

PBR materials

#
PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials simulate how light really behaves on a surface using maps such as colour, roughness and normals. They make leathers, fabrics and rubbers believable in a photorealistic footwear render.

Suede

#
Suede is leather worked on the flesh side to obtain a velvety, matte surface. In rendering it needs materials with a strong micro-roughness component to reproduce its soft look and the way it catches light.

Texture

#
A texture is the image applied to a 3D model's surface to reproduce the look of a material: leather grain, fabric weave, sole pattern. It determines much of a render's realism.

TPU

#
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is an elastic, abrasion-resistant material used for soles, midsoles and technical sneaker details. In 3D it is rendered with semi-transparent or rubbery materials depending on the application.

Production & workflow

Bill of materials (BOM)

#
The bill of materials (BOM) is the complete list of every material and component that makes up a shoe, with quantities and specifications. It is essential for costing and ordering materials, and is increasingly generated directly from the CAD model.

Collection

#
A collection is the coordinated set of styles a brand presents for a season. Designing it in 3D lets you develop, vary and present multiple styles coherently, reducing the physical samples needed.

Digital twin

#
A digital twin is the exact virtual replica of a real shoe, aligned to production measurements and materials. It is used to test, communicate and sell the product digitally, keeping the 3D model and the physical article consistent.

Lasting

#
Lasting is the stage where the upper is stretched and fixed onto the last to give it its final shape before it is joined to the sole. It is one of the most delicate production steps and affects fit and final quality.

Prototype

#
A prototype is the first physical sample of a style, made to assess its shape, fit and construction before mass production. Virtual prototyping reduces how many are needed by moving many checks into 3D.
